The National Grid for Learning (NGfL) has launched a free online Cybersecurity Training for School Governors, designed to equip leadership teams with the knowledge and skills needed to oversee and strengthen their school’s cybersecurity practices.
Attacks such as phishing, ransomware and malware can have devastating impacts, from breaches of confidential information to disruption of teaching and learning, compromising student safety.
As governors play a central role in setting policy and ensuring accountability, LGfL says it is vital they understand the risks and how to mitigate them. In line with LGfL’s commitment to supporting educators everywhere, this training provides governors with the knowledge and skills to navigate this complex area.
Training topics include:
Cybersecurity fundamentals – defining cyber threats (phishing, malware, ransomware) and understanding the impact of cyberattacks on schools (data breaches, disruption).
School-specific risks – identifying vulnerabilities in school IT systems (student data, administrative systems) and recognising potential targets for cybercriminals (financial records, student health information).
Governance responsibilities – reviewing and approving school cybersecurity policies,
overseeing implementation of security measures (staff training, software updates) and holding school leadership accountable for cybersecurity practices.
Best practice – implementing strong password policies and access controls, educating staff and students about cyberhygiene and maintaining data backups and disaster recovery plans.
Emerging threats – understanding new cyber threats and attack vectors and keeping pace with evolving technologies and vulnerabilities.
LGfL says its training will give governors the confidence and expertise to ensure their schools remain safe, secure and resilient in the face of growing cyber challenges.
Workshops are scheduled monthly from October to June. For more information or to book your place, please visit https://lgfl.bookinglive.com/book/add/p/160.
